Small in-4 , 19 x 14 cm, title with engraved view of Jerusalem + (22) nn pp + 191 pp + 235 pp + 230 pp + (1)( approbation) , with 50  text engravings and many vignettes, some pages slightly browned but in all a fine copy in a modern full leather binding with a raised back with gilt title, original book block preserved.

 

Rare first French edition of this illustrated voyage to the Holy Land by the Belgian Zuallart, considerably enlarged over the second Italian edition of 1595. The author himself made some of  the very detailed and clear drawings (mostly town views but also maps, plans of buildings and 1 work of art) we find in the work to document his pilgrimage. The voyage was made in 1586, and the engravings mainly employ the illustrations of the Italian editions by Natale Bonifaccio after drawings taken from life by the author, with some substitutions among the maps with plates by Galle or the Arsenius Brothers from Ortelius’ Epitome. The itinerary began in Venice, through the Mediterranean to Jaffa and whence to Jerusalem. The work includes c. 60 pages of Hellenic interest (pp. 114-180), with stops in Corfu, Paxu, Cephalonia, Zante, the Peninsula, Cerigo, Crete, Scarpanto, Rhodes & Cyprus. The author dedicates the French translation to Philippe de Merode, who had made the author promise to travel to Jerusalem. The 5 books contain 1. Guidelines for later pilgrims and the journey from Venice to Cyprus, 2. From Jaffa to Syria, 3 and 4. The Holy Land, 5. From Jaffa to Venice.
