Books. Rare Greek Bibles. Page 3

EXCEEDINGLY RARE, ORIGINAL 1800 FIRST AMERICAN EDITION PRINTING OF THE NEW TESTAMENT IN GREEK. This important, "Editio Prima Americana" turn-of-the-century religious work was printed by Isaiah Thomas, Worcester, Massachusetts. Interestingly, thick volume one belonged to two prominent figures. Bookplates of both author Robert R. Dearden and Rev. Anson Phelps Stokes can be found in the front of volume. Notably, Rev. Stokes is from the famous Stokes family of Anglo-American Philanthropists. The elder Stokes was well-known, New York City merchant, multimillionaire and philanthropist. Anson Stokes II was a noted clergyman in New York and Connecticut. He also directed the philanthropy of the Phelps Stokes Fund (founded in 1911) toward improving the lives of African and American blacks. Interestingly, he published a biography of Booker T. Washington in 1936. Family has a lineage of philanthropy dating back to the late 17th Century. Genuinely rare book is 478-pages in length. Volume is leather bound (appears to be original calf skin), which shows some wear (see scans). Front cover is detached, though present. First blank page is loose. Some markings on title page, and sporadic light foxing and soiling internally, not too bad. Volume is complete and intact otherwise. Despite its flaws, it remains a true antiquarian gem, seldom seen on the open market. A very worthy, and desirable acquisition indeed. Volume measures approx 9.5 x 16.5 x 3.5 cms.
