| The first English marriage in Cyprus, celebrated on board H.M.S. "Monarch" at Larnaka. 22.5 x 15 cms. Woodcut engraving from the December 1879 ( a rare date ) issue of The Graphic." My sketch" , writes the naval officer to whom we are indebted for this sketch, "represents a very interesting and unusual ceremony which was performed on board here at Cyprus. On arrival at Larnaka, an application was sent on board requesting that our chaplain would marry a lady and a gentleman on board. The couple had been waiting many months for an opportunity, as there are neither English churches nor clergymen at Larnaka. Such a very unusual ceremony on board an ironclad very naturally drew a great number of the officers into the captains cabin to witness the marriage. It was very quiet and simple, only the mother and the lady and one gentleman being present. The bride naturally seemed shy amongst so many of the opposite sex, and doubtless was relieved to reach terra firma again". Price: CyP. 25.00 |
