Engravings: The W. Unger Collection 1
Self portrait of William Unger, artist - engraver.
William Unger the well known American- Hungarian engraver of the
19th. century was commissioned by J. W. Bouton of New York to travel around
the museums and galleries of Europe and etch the works of the Masters. Bouton,
who later published the 71 etchings that follow tells us that " Etchings
are, at the present time ( circa 1865) of the greatest service by extending
more widely an acquaintance, with the painter's Art. They interpret to us and
make us familiar with the most valuable pictures of both hemispheres. We are
able to study them, compare them, refresh our memories, and to supply a want
that had before existed. Thanks to these powerful aids, we now have before us
a complete illustrated history of Art. The Dutch School has furnished by far
the largest number but first we begin with the Venetians."
All engravings are lightly mounted, from one edge only, on thick
white cardboard paper, ready to be framed. Measurements are given in
centimeters, width by height. Their condition is excellent with only the
occasional spot of foxing. These engravings are very rare ( I have been
surfing the web for the past three years to find any of Unger's engravings, to
roughly base my pricing them, to no avail ) most definitely rarer than Unger's
contemporary, Dore. I have scanned six etchings to the page, keeping my kbs to
below fifty per page so that pages download quickly. Should you require a
higher resolution scan of a particular image, please do not hesitate to email
me.
