14. CEPHALUS AND PROCRIS by
Guido Reni (1575-1642). Cephalus the husband of Procris was beloved by
Aurora; but as he repelled her advances, she advised him to put the
fidelity of Procris to the proof. The Goddess disguised him as a
foreigner and in this shape he paid a visit to his wife. Seduced by the
rich gifts which the foreigner presented to her , she was on the point
of yielding to his entreaties. Then Cephalus made himself known and
Procris ,for shame, fled to Crete. Then Artemis made her a present of a
hound and a javelin that never missed its mark. She also changed her
into a young girl and thus sent her to her husband. Cephalus wanted to
get possession of the dog and the javelin...probably not disliking the
young girl. At last he spoke to her of love... and then she made herself
known..... a reconciliation took place.. Procris followed him when he
went hunting... he hearing a noise near him thought that a wild beast
hid behind the thicket and unintentionally slew his wife.
