in original black & gilt-stamped dark red cloth. Very light edge wear,
tight, plates with original tissue guards. First American Edition. Added
to this edition is a summary of Di Cesnola’s discoveries, written by the
Museum’s president, John Taylor Johnston, pp. [449]-456. The Appendix
contains a catalogue of the engraved gems found in the treasure vaults
of the temple at Curium, by C.W.King of Trinity College, Cambridge, and
a short description of the different types of vases discovered, with
their inscriptions, written by A.S.Murray of the British Museum.
The Italian-born Cesnola served as United States consul at Larnaca in Cyprus from 1865 to 1877. During his stay he conducted numerous excavations and discovered a large number of antiquities. The collection was purchased by the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, and Cesnola was appointed director.
