Ditto Ornate hardcover ( 5 1/2 x 8 3/4), Longmans, Green & Co., London, 1880. Assumed FIRST EDITION. SIGNED "TO T.M. D___ WITH BEST WISHES FROM THE AUTHOR ANNIE BRASSEY, November 1882, COMMONWEALTH IOWA. Numerous engravings, many full-page, all still protected with tissue guards. Varying degrees of age discoloration as seen in pictures in this listing, but there are more amazingly clean and bright pages than the discolored ones. Two fold-out maps are missing half of each. Both front and rear deep turquoise endpapers have crack in spine seam paper and half-title page and front free endpaper together are a bit loose but still sewn in place--entire book still securely bound otherwise. Ornate cover by M. Gustave Dore still has a significant amount of the gilt design, although dulled, reddish/pink cloth banner runs from front to back with some lifting at the ends--moreso affected on rear--age discoloration, rubbed edges and corners, some areas of fray; deeply engraved cover design; paper label with number 106 on spine; outer page edges darkened; spine still quite strong and straight.
