of Abraham Ortelius (1527-1598), the first true atlas in the modern
sense. One of the more elegantly designed multipart maps in the
Theatrum, Ortelius drew upon earlier maps by the Italian
mapmaker and publisher Giovanni Francesco Camocio (fl. 1560-1575),
adding scholarly notations referencing classical scholarship as well
