x 35.1 cms. Antwerp 1598. From Theatrum Orbis Terrarum. This bold map of
Cyprus was drawn directly by Ortelius from a written account by the
French naturalist and traveler, Pierre Belon (1553). It is embellished
with three sailing ships, a sea monster and three elaborate strap work
cartouches, one of which encloses an inset map of the Greek island of
Lemnos. Engraved by Jan van Deutecum. French text on verso. Fine
impression with slight toning along centerfold. Small tear ( repaired )
in upper blank margin, just touching neat line, with some ink markings
in right blank margin. Fine old colour. Price: CyP 950.00 |
