For four years, 25,000 men searched Cyprus for General George Grivas, leader of the E.O.K.A., the Cypriot terrorist organization. Everywhere in the strife-torn island his mark was seen - dead bodies, leaflets, burned out buildings, execution orders - but no Grivas. Legend grew. Many said he was dead, or that he never really existed. But he did exist, and does; and his story reads like a master's handbook of sabotage and underground tactics. Grivas was born on Cyprus, had an honorable, if not spectacular, military career. During the occupation of Greece by the Axis he grew to hate the communists, who dominated the partisan guerrilla warfare. Eventually his extreme rightist activities thwarted his rise in the army and in politics, but his failure did not dampen his inordinate desire for power. He bided his time, organizing groups and smuggling arms. His avowed purpose: The union of Cyprus with Greece. After independence was promised to Cyprus, Grivas came out of hiding in March 1959. He was accorded a hero's welcome when he returned to Athens. Soon he declared himself against Archbishop Makarios, claiming the patriot-clergyman had betrayed the cause.
