CYPRUS: A PORTRAIT AND AN APPRECIATION. BY SIR HARRY LUKE. London: George G. Harrap & Co., 1973. Revised and Enlarged Edition of the 1965 Edition.
A nice copy of this classic book about the history of Cyprus, from the Middle Ages to the 1950s. The author was a British government official in Cyprus in the 1930s and draws on his personal experience.
From the dust jacket: "This book is the essence of the author's experience of Cyprus that extended well over half a century, from the placid era of the suzerainty of Sultan Abdul Hamid II to the establishment of the Republic. Sir Harry Luke knew Cyprus in several capacities; as an administrator speaking the languages of the country; as an historian; as a student of archaeology; as a lover of nature. He brought each of these capacities to bear in the writing of this book, which he designed to be 'a portrait and an appreciation in historical, scenic, and human perspective.' The wild range of the author's knowledge and interest in 'the Enchanted Island' and all that concerns it, and the originality of his outlook, are well exemplified in the choice of illustrations, many of which are from photographs he took at different times from 1908 onwards.
"The Contents of this book are: Preface to the First Edition; Note to the Second Edition; The Dawn; Early Days; The First Coming of the English: Richard Lion Heart and the Emperor Isaac; Cyprus under the Lusignans, 1192-1369: Honor and Glory; Arodaphnousa; The Later Lusignans, 1369-1489: Decline and Fall; Who was Othello?; Cyprus under the Turks; The Second British Occupation; The Sweet Land of Cyprus; Nicosia; A Seaport in Cyprus; Shrines and Sects; Some Cypriotes - Zeno of Kition; S. Barnabas; S.
