From the Dust Jacket: "Major Alexander Palma di Cesnola, soldier, explorer, diplomat and antiquarian, was born at Rivarolo- Canavese in Turin in 1840. He first visited Cyprus in 1873 where his brother, General Luigi Palma di Cesnola, was the American consul. Major Cesnola was nominated American Vice Consul to Paphos, an area well known in the ancient history of the island. Major Cesnola had a great enthusiasm for antiquities and top up archaeological excavations assisting his brother for 12 years. In 1875 he spent a year at the British Museum studying the language and archaeology of the island. He then returned to Cyprus where, aided in funds by Edwin H. Lawrence, his future father-in-law, he continued the excavations on his own account. "In less than 3 years he had achieved splendid results: 14,000 objects were discovered and now form the valuable collection known as the "Lawrence-Cesnola Collection." "The British occupation of Cyprus put a stop to the excavations and Major Cesnola devoted time to publishing his important work on the excavations of Salaminia. In 1882 the same work was revised by him and took the form of the present Salaminia." Quarto-sized hardcover book with xlviii + 328 pages of text and one page of publisher's advertisements.
