| THE ECONOMICS OF CYPRUS: A SURVEY TO 1914. BY DIAMOND JENNESS. Montreal: McGill University Press, 1962. A nice copy of this classic work on the economics and history of the island of Cyprus. This book was published more than 40 years ago and never reprinted. It is now hard to find. From the dust jacket: "Cyprus has paid dearly for its strategic location. Coveted by many nations, it has been racked by invasion and change throughout the centuries. This book is an account of the long transition from a feudal to a modern commercial society set against the turbulent and troubled background of the Island's history. Political changes in Cyprus have profoundly affected its economic life. Early man began the destruction of the forests and classical Athens converted Cyprus to a granary. Egyptians, Phoenicians and Persians struggled for its possession. From 1200 A.D. onward French, Venetians, Turks, and English successively used the Island as a frontier fortress and as a trading mart. "The author has used official and private sources in Cyprus, Great Britain and North America to find much new material on the economic, agricultural, geographic and political factors which shaped the destiny of these island people. He supports his investigation with maps and statistics. Yet the human perspective remains in the many delightful first-hand accounts. These eye-witness reports left to us by soldiers, merchants, administrators, and other visitors to Cyprus, graphically depict man's long struggle to wrest a livelihood from Cyprus' meager resources. "The Contents of this book are: Preface; Illustrations; Introduction: The Geographical Background of Cyprus; Prehistoric, Classical, and Byzantine Cyprus: Neolithic Period; Bronze Age; Early Iron Age; Roman Period; Byzantine Period; French Lusignan Regime: 1192-1489; Venetian Regime: 1489-1571; Turkish Regime: 1571-1878; British Rule: 1878-1914; The Carob Tree; Stone-walled Terraces; Growth of Agriculture; Imports and Exports; Local Revenues and Expenditures; Agriculture; Sponge fishing; and Index.
