1.Hoisting the British Standard at Nicosia. 1878. 23x20 cms. Following the official ceremony at the Seraglio, the British flag was hoisted at the Paphos Gate where the British troops had camped. The Vice-Admiral Lord John Hay, in an effort to avoid touching the dignity of Turkish officials ordered that the Ottoman flag be lowered prior to his arrival and the ceremony of hoisting the British flag. The Greek population was hoping that the new Christian regime would be different from the Ottoman one and that it would gradually give the island its complete freedom......
