" I traversed the walls and ruins of this city and naturally bent my steps towards the ruins of the ancient Cathedral Church, now used as a mosque. The west front although dilapidated, shows traces of great architectural beauty; and it is depressing to see the Moslem disfigurement and desecration. Surely, where the Mohammedans are in such a miserable minority, these ancient churches should be restored to their pristine sanctity, and the ugly traces of Islam removed, let the ruins be Christian ruins, at least" ILN October 5, 1878.
