| 66. Mountain of the Holy Cross ( Stavrovouni), view from near Larnaca. 1878. 21x10 cms. This engraving illustrates Stavrovouni. The monastery of the Holy Cross on its summit has always been a frequent place for pilgrimages by the local Christians, as a piece of the HOLY CROSS is kept there, brought to the island by St. Helena, mother of Emperor Constantine, in the 4th. century. Significally the Moslem mosque amongst some pine trees that can be seen on one side of the salt lake is considered one of the most famous and sacred places of pilgrimage by the Moslems. It ranks third in the Moslem world, after Mecca and Medina. It is believed that Umm Haram, an aunt of the Prophet, was buried here. Price: CyP 45.00 |
