A Colossal Vase Near Limisso in Cyprus.
An antique lithograph by Luigi Mayer from the
work entitled Views in Egypt from the Original Drawings in the
Possession of Sir Robert Ainsie Taken During his Embassy to
Constantinople. Engraved under the direction of Thomas Milton.
London: R. Boyer, 1802. It depicts a large monumental stone vase
on the island of Cyprus near the city of modern Limassol. Several individuals
are climbing or examining the monument. An attempt was made
to transport the vase to a European capital, but the ship carrying the
vase was lost at sea. ( A modern version of the Vase was
"erected" by the Mayor of Limassol a few years back didn't
have a better fate either ).The image presents a wonderful vignette of
early nineteenth century rural Cyprus--and a monument that now lies at
the bottom of the sea! The lithograph is in excellent condition
with a minimum of foxing in the margins and the entire page measures
approximately 45 x 34 cms.
If not the rarest print , it is most
definitely the most famous of them all.
Sorry, I overslept and missed the
auction time
