11. Mosque of Saint Sophia at Nicosia. 1878. 15x13 cms. The Cathedral of Saint Sophia is a fine edifice erected by the French crusader rulers of Cyprus in 1209. It was sufficiently completed in 1326 and in that year it was dedicated to St. Sophia. When Lala Mustafa defeated the Venetians in 1571 , after the siege of Nicosia, he entered the capital of the island triumphantly and proceeded directly to the Cathedral ,where he prayed to Allah and gave orders to convert the Cathedral into an Islamic mosque. The church is today referred to by the Turks as the Selimiye Mosque in honour of Sultan Selim II who ordered the capture of the island.
