| 44. Greek priests blessing the British flag at Nicosia. 1878. 30x21 cms. This engraving depicts the scene at the door of the Metokhi of Kykko. This was the first time in 300 years that the flag of a Christian nation was to be officially hoisted( by an Archimandrite) in Cyprus. The abbot of the monastery, Sofronios, later Archbishop, later " demanded" of Sir Garnet for a swift union of Cyprus with Greece.... to which demand the British gave him instead, very swiftly, an Honorary Doctorate degree from Oxford.
